Cleaning up your Internet Footprint

I had an experience this week that gave me pause.  I posted a job listing to hire a college student as an assistant for the summer.  The applications began to come in.  The very first one seemed like a reasonable candidate, and out of curiosity I looked up the person on facebook.  I was taken aback when this person’s profile photo did not exactly give the good “first impression” that a job candidate would probably like to convey. In fact, it was not suitable for my children to even view it.  Needless to say, this did not leave me with a warm “please come work for me” feeling!

This got me to thinking about the huge internet footprint that I have as a website owner and blogger.  Facebook and many other companies online now own huge amounts of information about us. There are services that help with removing personal information from the internet. This can be quite useful for reducing spam, or even the risk of identity theft.

Lesson here:  Keep your internet footprint clean!  Whether you are applying for a job, or applying to graduate school, or just trying to join the PTA, make sure you think about everything you put on the internet.  And for now, go back and take a look at your social accounts and give them a good spring cleaning!
