How Much Farther?
by Laurel Smith
How to Never Have to Answer this Perpetual
Question Again!
|
Make an interactive model
of your vehicle on a trip! It will show your child exactly how much ground
you've covered and how much more you have to go!
If you're like most parents,
you are exaspirated from having to answer the same questions over and over,
especially when kids are tired and feeling trapped in those car seats!
Almost as popular as "are we there yet?" is the question, "How much farther?!"
Here is a great way to tackle that question, in a visual way that is easy
for toddlers and young children to understand.
Have
your child draw a picture of your car, or print an image of your car and
have your child color it, or use the pre-colored minivan image. Cut
out the image and punch a couple of holes in it near the "x" marks that
are provided. String it on a ribbon or some yarn and tape it carefully
in an out-of-the-way area in your car. Now start your journey with
the paper car at one end and gradully slide it along as you make progress
on your trip! Your tiny traveler will be able to see easily how much farther
before you arrive at your destination. For parents, it's as simple
as: when you've reached the end of your rope, you're there!
It might help you to keep
up with your progress if you mark the ribbon into segments that are equivalent
to miles or time blocks, depending on how you would like to record your
progress. If your trip is covering several days, you might want to break
it down for each day rather than the entire multi-day distance. If the
ribbon setup is not convenient, you can also use this idea just by putting
some tape on the back of the tiny car image and move it along the window
to mark your progress.
Some simliar deas that are
loved by toddlers and parents on the road everywhere are: Travel
Tickets and surprise packages that you can read about along with lots
of other activities to keep kids busy on a road
trip
